Ciprofloxacin inhibits DNA gyrase and arrests the bacterial metabolism, since vital information can no longer be read from the bacterial chromosomes. After oral administration Ciprofloxacin is absorbed from the small intestine, reaching peak serum concentrations 60 to 90 minutes later. The half life of Ciprofloxacin is between 3 and 5 hours after oral administration.

The usual adult dosage for patients with urinary tract infections is 250mg every 12 hours. For patient with complicated infections caused by organisms not highly susceptible, 500mg may be administered every 12 hours. The duration of treatment depends upon the severity of infection. Generally, Ciprofioxacin should be continued for at least 2 days after the signs and symptoms of infection have disappeared. The usual duration is 7 to 14 days and complicated infections more prolonged therapy may be required. Bone and joint infections may require treatment for 4 to 6 weeks or Ionger. Infections dirrhoea may be treated for 5-7days.

Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones chemotherapeutics.

Restrictions on Use: Ciprofloxacin should be used with caution in the elderly and in patients with previous damage to the central nervous system, e.g in epilepsy and/or reduced cnvulsionthreshold, and in the event o f convulsive fits in the patient/s case history, reduced cerebral blood flow, changes in the brain structure or stroke. Fluoroquinolone drugs such as ciprofloxacin are not recommended in pregnant and lactating women, also not recommended in chidren and young adolescent as there has been reports there is a risk of injury to the musculoskeletal system.

– The following side effects have been observed in clinical studies:

Other Side effects: Very rarely’ articular disorders, general lassitude, temporary impairment of kidney function.

Convulsions, increased intracranial pressures, and toxic psychosis have been reported in patients receiving drugs in this class. Quinolones may also cause central nervous system stimulation which may lead to tremors, restlessness, lightheadedness, confusion and hallucinations. If these reactions occur in patients receiving Ciprofloxacin, the drug should be discontinued and appropriate measures instituted. As it is with all quinolones, Ciprofloxacin should be used with caution in patients with known or suspected CNS disorders, such as severe cerebral arteriosclerosis, epilepsy, and other factors that predispose to seizures.
